Overview

ACDI/VOCA seeks a specialist in Biogas Safety for a Volunteer Assignment in Tajikistan. The selected Volunteer will collaborate with the host to educate users on the safe operation of bioreactors for biogas production. Through training and guidance, farmers and other users will learn essential safety protocols to prevent accidents and properly handle biogas systems. This includes measures for safely managing organic waste, controlling gas emissions, and maintaining equipment to avoid leaks or malfunctions. By focusing on safety, the project aims to ensure that the technology is effective and poses minimal risk to the environment and the communities using it.

 

This is a 2-week assignment, scheduled for October/November 2024. 

 

Provisions for the Volunteer:

  • In-country support from field office staff
  • Local cell phone to use during assignment (if needed)

Responsibilities

The selected Volunteer will accompany the Host on visits to pilot biogas projects in different areas of Tajikistan, where they will monitor key aspects of safety engineering.

 

While in-country, the Volunteer will provide evaluations and guidance on:

  • Proper layout of the biogas plant, compliance with safety standards, with proper separation of hazardous areas
  • Availability of adequate ventilation systems, especially in closed areas, to prevent gas accumulation
  • Inspection of Biogas Equipment: condition of digesters, gas tanks, pipes and valves for leaks, corrosion or wear that may lead to safety hazards
  • Inspection for presence of hazard and warning signs: safety signs (e.g. “No smoking”, “Flammable gas”) are clearly visible around hazardous areas
  • Check Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Do users have access to and use PPE correctly, such as gas masks, helmets, gloves and safety shoes, etc.
  • Check Raw Materials and By-Products Handling: How are organic wastes stored and treated to prevent contamination or accidents
  • Submit a report on the safety status of the pilot project and compliance with best practices for biogas plant safety management

 

Qualifications

  • University degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • At least 5 years relevant work experience
  • Practical knowledge of biogas production processes, risk assessment and hazard analysis, safety regulations and standards, emergency response management, equipment maintenance and inspection, hazardous materials handling, personal protective equipment, environmental protection standards

  • Excellent cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills
  • Previous international experience a plus
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel and apps like Zoom, WhatsApp, Facebook Etc
