Overview

ACDI/VOCA seeks a specialist in Compost Program and Facility Design for a Volunteer Assignment in Georgia. The selected Volunteer will collaborate with the Host to develop a composting program to convert organic waste into useful products.

 

***As part of the Farmer-to-Farmer Consortium, this assignment is made possible through USAID funding. In accordance to USAID guidelines, any candidates submitted for consideration under this project must have a valid US passport or Green Card.***

 

This is a 2-week assignment, scheduled for Spring/Early Summer 2025. 

 

Provisions for the Volunteer:

  • All international and local travel
  • All lodging
  • A per diem to cover meals and incidentals
  • Travel Visa (if applicable)
  • Travel Emergency Medical Insurance
  • In-country support from field office staff
  • Local cell phone to use during assignment (if needed)

Responsibilities

The selected Volunteer will assist in the design of a facility and program to compost a wide range of materials including tree and vine pruning, forest waste, fruit and vegetable waste, and manure. The Volunteer will assist with choosing the many options for compost products including liquid and solid fertilizer and compost teas. Knowledge of techniques for composting large volumes of agricultural organic waste coupled with an economic analysis is a plus.  ​​

 

While in-country, the Volunteer will:

  • Visit the facility, members farms, farmers’ market and agricultural territories in the area to have a holistic view
  • Lecture on composting technology including C:N ratios, turning, and moisture management
  • Review compost options/Develop a physical plan for composting layout
  • Lay groundwork for first composting products and markets
  • Discuss composting economy of scale 

Qualifications

  • University degree in Environmental Science, Sustainable Agriculture, or a related field
  • At least 5 years relevant work experience
  • Practical experience designing composting programs
  • Excellent cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills
  • Previous international experience a plus
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and apps like Zoom, WhatsApp, Facebook Etc.
